Honest Movie Review

For me the movie O had many ups and downs with how it represented the play Othello. In one aspect I felt as though the movie stayed true to the play given the shift in setting and the troubles that can come with reinacting some of the outdated major plot points. One of the major plot points that stuck out to me in particular was during the party scene where Cassio loses all of his reputation when he stabs Roderigo. For one this scene felt extremely fictional as no one in real life would ever stab anyone else for calling them names. On top of that, in a modern day setting, you would never just sit out for two games if you stabbed someone, instead you would probably be going to jail for a good bit of time. This point in the play definitely had the roughest time fitting in with the change in setting, but than again, when you really think about it, there were little to no other routes for the director to take that would have stirred all of the characters in the same way that Shakespear had intended. Many of the scenes that are simular to this one all have the same issue of not fitting in the the modern basketball team setting that this recreation was going for. Even when there are many things that the movie did very well. For starters all of the characters spoke for themselves, meaning they all were clearly representative of each individual character from the movie. From the very beginning it was very appearent who Iago, Roderigo, and Othello were and as more and more characters were introduced the plot seemed to progress simularly as smooth. One of the other great aspects of the movie, which in my opinion worked for and against how representative it was to the movie itself, was how religiously it followed each and every plot point within the play. For me it was a genuine suprise when Iago purchased the gun to kill Cassio and Othello and when Othello smothered Desdemona to death. For me I think this is exactly how Shakespear imagined the play being portrayed as a genuine shook to the audience with how voilent and crazy the last few minutes played out. Overall I think that the play had many ups and downs with its producion, however in the end I do think it was very entertaining while it stayed true to the original play itself.

  1. The movie is a little melodramatic, maybe a little over the top. But bullying can often lead to violence in real life, so this part of the movie didn't seem unrealistic to me in real life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4PADgPA6SQ
